2. Who Can Apply for the Opportunity Card?

There are two ways to qualify.

Option 1: Through a recognised qualification

If Germany fully recognizes your foreign university degree or vocational qualification, you can apply as a skilled worker. You do not need to score six points or submit language proof for this route.

Option 2: Through the points system

If your qualification is not fully recognized in Germany, you can apply by meeting the basic requirements and scoring at least six points.

You must have a recognised qualification in the country where you obtained it. Vocational training must generally last at least two years. You also need German A1 or English B2 proficiency.

How are the six points calculated?

Work experience must be relevant to your qualification. Applicants must provide supporting documents for the points they claim.

3. How Much Money Must You Show?

For 2026, the financial requirement is €1,091 per month.

A blocked account or a formal declaration of commitment can be used as proof. An eligible part-time employment contract may also count towards the financial requirement.

4. What Should Indian Applicants Check?

Before applying, check whether your university has H+ status in the Anabin database and whether your degree is listed as equivalent or comparable. If the information is insufficient, you may need a Statement of Comparability from ZAB.

The German Embassy in India also asks for proof that an Indian degree was completed through regular, on-campus study. Distance-learning graduates may need confirmation that their program was approved by the relevant Indian authority.

For English proficiency, the Embassy does not accept PTE, Duolingo, or TOEFL online results as proof.

5. Can You Extend the Opportunity Card?

The initial card is issued for up to 12 months. If you find qualified employment but do not yet meet the conditions for another employment residence permit, you may qualify for a Follow-up Opportunity Card for up to two additional years.

Graduates of German universities have a separate job-search permit that allows up to 18 months to find employment.
