Haitian and Sudanese nationals covered by Canada's temporary work permit measures have more time to apply for an extension. The Canadian government has extended the measures until December 30, 2027.
The announcement came on October 27, 2026, when the previous measures were due to expire.
The extension is for eligible people who already hold work permits issued under these special measures. They must apply to renew their permits and pay the required processing fees. The decision does not give every Haitian or Sudanese national in Canada the right to extend their Canada work permit.
Canada introduced these measures to help people affected by crises in their home countries who could not safely return.
For workers whose permits are nearing expiry, the application deadline matters. Those who apply before their permits expire can generally continue working under the same conditions while awaiting a decision, provided they meet the requirements for maintained status.
The extension gives eligible workers more time to remain employed in Canada while the temporary measures are in force.
