Ontario has had a busy October for skilled workers hoping to settle in Canada. Within about two weeks, the province brought back a regional program and made life easier for high earners, and both changes matter if you’re mapping out a Canada PR pathway.
REDI Returns for 2027: A Regional Route Worth Knowing
Let’s start with the regional side. The Regional Economic Development through Immigration initiative, known as REDI, relaunched on October 14, 2026, and will run until the end of 2027. It sits within the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) and is meant to bring skilled workers to communities struggling with labor shortages. This round covers Greater Sudbury, Kenora District, Nipissing District, Rainy River District, Renfrew County, and Thunder Bay.
There’s no separate REDI application, though. You’ll still need to meet the usual OINP eligibility requirements, and even then, permanent residence isn’t guaranteed.
Higher Earnings Now Count for More
The second change is about money. On October 5, Ontario updated the Expression of Interest scoring under the Ontario Workforce Priority stream. If you earned at least CAD 80,000 in a single year during the past five, you now receive 10 points for your Canadian earnings history, provided a Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment backs it up. Better still, the update was applied automatically, so existing profiles already reflect it, and you don’t have to change anything.
What This Means for Your Plans
Taken together, the message is clear: Ontario wants skilled workers in its regions, and it rewards strong Canadian earnings. Whether that helps you depends on your own profile, of course.
