Picture this. You’ve got the offer letter and you’ve told everyone. Then someone asks, “So, is the visa sorted?” and your stomach flips. Because an offer isn’t a visa.
The Australia student visa requirements for 2026 are pricier and stricter than a year ago. The fee rose in July, the family rules changed on 2 October, and Home Affairs reads your answers closely. Here’s what actually matters.
What the Subclass 500 Lets You Do
The Student Visa (subclass 500) lets you study an approved course in Australia, for up to five years depending on your course. While classes are in session you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight, and more during scheduled breaks. Master’s by research and doctoral students follow different rules.
And remember: an offer never guarantees a visa. Home Affairs decides that separately.
Who Qualifies? Australia Student Visa Requirements in Plain English
You need to meet six requirements:
Course and CoE. An offer for an eligible course, then a Confirmation of Enrolment once you’ve completed the provider’s enrolment steps.
Genuine Student. Proof that study is your real reason for going.
Money. Enough for tuition, living costs and travel.
English. An approved test, unless you’re exempt.

Health and character. Health exams and police certificates, if requested.
OSHC. Overseas Student Health Cover for your stay, unless exempt.
The Documents You’ll Need
Your checklist depends on your course, provider and nationality, so run the official Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool before lodging. Typically you’ll need a valid passport, your CoE, transcripts, English results, OSHC details, financial evidence, and your Genuine Student answers with supporting evidence.
People forget two things: employment records, which back up your story, and extra consent and welfare paperwork if you’re under 18. Watch the timing too. Some applicants upload financial and English evidence at lodgement, while others are asked later. Miss a request and you risk refusal.
How Much Money Do You Need for an Australia Student Visa?
Start with AUD 29,710. That’s the 12-month living-cost amount Home Affairs uses for a single student. It’s a visa figure, not a promise your real costs will match, and they can be higher depending on your city and lifestyle.
Add the first 12 months of tuition (or a pro-rata amount for a shorter course), your travel costs, and costs for any eligible family or school-age children. If tuition is AUD 25,000, you’d show that, plus AUD 29,710, plus travel.
Proof can be bank deposits, eligible loans, scholarships, or support from an eligible parent or partner. If someone else is paying, explain your relationship and show the money is genuinely available to you. A sudden deposit with no history raises more questions than it answers.
Then there’s the fee. Since 1 July 2026, the standard visa charge is AUD 2,500, up from AUD 2,000. Eligible ASEAN passport holders and ELICOS or non-award applicants pay less. The charge is generally non-refundable, and you’ll also need to budget for health exams, police certificates, English tests and insurance.
The Genuine Student Requirement: Where Good Applications Go Wrong
Strong grades and enough money still aren’t enough if your answers feel generic. The Genuine Student (GS) requirement applies to applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. You’ll answer online questions about your circumstances, why you chose Australia and your provider, why the course suits you, and how it helps your career.
Each answer is capped at 150 words and must be in English. So skip lines that could fit any student. Name the course, say what your background brings, and attach evidence where you can. Do you have to rule out permanent migration forever? No. The test is whether you genuinely intend to study.
Do You Need IELTS for an Australian Student Visa?
Not always, because exemptions exist. Otherwise you need an approved test. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the minimum IELTS overall score is generally 6.0, with lower thresholds for some packaged courses. PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are accepted too, but at-home online tests aren’t. Your university may also ask for a higher score than the visa does.
Bringing Family? The Australia Student Visa Requirements Changed on 2 October
From 2 October 2026, most student visa applicants can’t include a partner or children, and family can’t be added after the visa is granted. Families already together in Australia may be treated differently when an eligible student visa holder applies again onshore. Most temporary visa holders also can no longer lodge a student visa application from inside Australia. Applications lodged before 2 October aren’t affected.
Parents of students under 18 should look at the Student Guardian visa (subclass 590). Don’t assume the old rules still apply.
Before You Hit “Submit”
Apply early, because processing times vary and lodging guarantees nothing. Work out your total costs now, run the checklist tool, and give real time to your GS answers, since that’s where applications are won or lost. Then check the official page before you submit.
