Germany Immigration Update 2026: 157 Shortage Occupations Create Opportunities for Skilled Workers
Germany continues to face a significant shortage of skilled professionals, creating opportunities for international workers considering Germany immigration in 2026. The latest analysis from Germany's Federal Employment Agency shows that 157 occupational categories experienced skilled-worker shortages in 2025, despite the country's weaker economic environment.
For Indian professionals exploring a Germany work visa, Germany Opportunity Card or EU Blue Card, the latest figures provide an important indication of where employment demand remains strong.
Germany Reports Shortages in 157 Occupations
According to the Federal Employment Agency, some of Germany's most significant shortages continue to occur in:
- Healthcare and nursing
- Construction
- Skilled trades
- Professional driving
- Childcare and education
- Cooking
- Surveying
- Social work and social pedagogy
Around 402,000 skilled-worker, specialist and expert vacancies subject to social insurance contributions were registered on average during 2025. Roughly half of registered skilled-worker vacancies were associated with shortage occupations.
However, applicants should not interpret this as a shortage across every profession. The Federal Employment Agency specifically notes that Germany does have a general labour shortage across the entire economy.
