A holiday trip to the United States can turn stressful if your travel documents are not in order. An expired visa, a passport nearing its expiry date, or even a pending immigration application could affect your return.
With the holiday season approaching, foreign nationals living in the US or planning to visit need to check more than just their flight tickets. The US holiday travel 2026 guidelines highlight several important points that travellers should understand before leaving the country.
Check Your Passport and Visa First
The US generally requires a passport to remain valid for six months beyond the intended stay. Some countries are exempt under special agreements. However, travelers should check whether their country is on the exemption list before making plans.
There is another detail to remember. If your passport expires before your approved stay ends, US authorities may limit your permitted stay to the passport's expiry date.
Your visa must also be valid when you return. Check that it matches your current immigration category and has an unused entry if it allows only a limited number of entries.

Can You Return with an Expired Visa?
In certain cases, travelers can return to the US with an expired visa through a facility called Automatic Visa Revalidation.
It generally covers eligible short trips of 30 days or less to Canada, Mexico, or certain nearby islands. A valid I-94 is also required. Travellers who apply for a new visa during the trip cannot use this facility. Some nationalities are also excluded.
