Germany Opportunity Card Points System 2026: How Are Points Calculated?
Germany continues to attract international skilled professionals through the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), a pathway designed to allow eligible applicants to enter Germany and search for qualified employment.
For Indian professionals considering jobs in Germany without already having a job offer, understanding the Germany Opportunity Card points system is an important first step.
What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?
The Germany Opportunity Card allows eligible non-EU professionals to enter Germany to search for employment.
There are two main ways to qualify. Applicants whose professional or academic qualification is fully recognised in Germany may qualify as recognised skilled workers without needing to achieve six points.
Other applicants can qualify through the points-based system, where they generally need at least 6 points, in addition to meeting the basic eligibility requirements.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
Before calculating points, applicants using the points route generally need an eligible academic or vocational qualification. A vocational qualification should normally involve at least two years of training and be recognised by the state in the country where it was obtained.
Applicants must also demonstrate at least German A1 or English B2 language ability and show that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves while in Germany.
