Your PGWP is about to expire, but your Canadian job is going well. You want to stay, keep earning, and perhaps apply for permanent residence. What happens if your work permit runs out before you have another option?
This is a situation many international graduates need to plan for. The expiry date is not just a date on a document. It can affect your right to work and your permission to remain in Canada. What you can do next depends on your immigration status and the applications you have already made.
Your PGWP Has Expired. Can You Still Stay in Canada?
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is generally a one-time work permit for eligible international graduates. In most cases, it cannot simply be renewed because the holder wants to continue working.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the work permit's expiry date is usually also the date your temporary resident status expires. If your permit has a separate “Must leave Canada by” date, however, that date determines when your status expires.
If you have not applied to extend or change your status before the relevant deadline, you may lose your legal status. You must stop working when your work authorization ends.
That does not mean every graduate must leave Canada on the day their PGWP expires. Someone who applied for an eligible extension before expiry may have maintained status while waiting for a decision.
What If You Applied Before Your Permit Expired?
Timing can make a significant difference.
If you applied to extend your work permit before it expired and meet IRCC's requirements, you can generally remain in Canada while the application is processed. You may also continue working under the conditions of your previous permit.
