You’ve spent years caring for older people back home. You hear Australia needs thousands more carers, you spot headlines about a new visa, and you go looking for the application form.
There isn’t one. Not yet.
On 20 October 2026, ABC News reported that aged care providers and the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) want a dedicated aged care visa Australia could offer overseas workers. They warn that proposed migration cuts could make recruiting harder. But a call for a visa isn’t a visa. So what’s real?
Is There a New Aged Care Visa Coming? Not Yet
Aging Australia and CEDA are pushing for an Essential Skills Visa, a dedicated pathway for jobs with long-term shortages. It could cover aged or disabled carers, personal care assistants, and nursing support workers. CEDA argues that the current labor agreement approach is failing to fix critical shortages and should be replaced with a new visa program.
But the ABC report doesn’t say the government has announced the visa, so you can’t apply for it. If someone offers you an “Essential Skills Visa” application today, be careful.
Why Australia Keeps Asking for Care Workers
The numbers explain the urgency. Ageing Australia estimates the sector will need around 110,000 more care workers by the end of this decade, and the ABC report says 51% of the residential aged care workforce was born overseas. Migrants already hold the system up.
Politics adds pressure. The Coalition wants net overseas migration cut to 100,000 a year for its first two years in office, though it says aged care workers would get transition arrangements. Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has named healthcare, including aged care, among occupations for prioritized visa processing.
