Australia is changing where applicants can apply for and receive their Training Visa (Subclass 407). From November 12, 2026, applicants must be outside Australia both when they submit their application and when the visa is granted. The change could affect temporary visa holders currently living in Australia who plan to switch to a 407 visa.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, applications submitted from inside Australia on or after November 12 will be considered invalid, even if the ImmiAccount system allows applicants to lodge them.
This is an important change in Australian visa rules, particularly for people who are already in the country on another visa and want to take part in workplace-based training.
What should applicants do before applying?
People currently in Australia who plan to apply for a 407 visa will need to leave the country before submitting their application. The department advises applicants to check their existing visa expiry dates and make sure they leave before their current visa expires.
They should also confirm that their sponsor has received approval and that their training visa nomination has been approved. Applicants are advised to prepare their documents and check their health examination requirements before travelling.
Applicants can visit Australia on another valid visa while their 407 application is being processed. However, they must follow that visa's conditions and leave Australia before their 407 visa is granted. They will not receive a bridging visa linked to an offshore application.
What about existing applications?
Applicants who submitted a valid 407 visa application before November 12, 2026, will not be affected by this new location requirement. Their applications will be assessed under the rules that applied when they lodged them.
