Canada could be looking at immigration differently again. After tightening its rules to control the number of newcomers, the country may consider bringing in more people as population growth slows to a level not seen since the Second World War.
The Economic Times, in its October 17 report, said Immigration Minister Lena Diab had signaled the possibility of raising immigration levels. The government’s next immigration plan, expected in November 2026, could provide more clarity on what comes next.
Why does Canada need more immigrants?
Canada’s recent immigration debate has largely centered on housing shortages, rising living costs, and pressure on public services. The government has tried to bring immigration numbers under control, particularly among temporary residents.
Now, slower population growth is adding another concern. Businesses need workers, and the country must consider how it will support its economy in the years ahead. Immigration could help meet some of those needs.
Whether this will lead to higher immigration targets remains to be seen. The government has yet to confirm the numbers or explain which categories could be affected.
What should Indians planning Canada PR know?
For Indian applicants, the possibility of a change is worth following. More permanent resident admissions could open additional places if the government chooses to expand the relevant programs.
But a higher target does not automatically mean more invitations for every applicant. Eligibility rules, selection criteria, and the number of places available under individual immigration pathways will continue to matter.
Nor does the possibility of increasing permanent immigration mean or temporary will become easier to obtain.
