What is Automatic Visa Revalidation?
Some travelers can return to the United States with an expired visa stamp under a provision known as Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR). It is a limited rule, not a way to renew a visa.
It may apply to eligible nonimmigrants who make a trip of 30 days or less to Canada or Mexico. Certain F and J visa holders may also qualify after visiting an adjacent island.
Who can use it?
Travellers generally need a valid passport and an unexpired admission record, such as Form I-94. They must also continue to meet the requirements of their immigration category.
There are important limits. If you apply for a new US visa while abroad, you cannot use AVR to return. The same applies if that application is refused. A trip lasting more than 30 days or travel to a country outside the permitted destinations can also make you ineligible.
Students should take extra care. For example, F and J visa holders who travel to Cuba cannot rely on AVR. M visa holders face separate travel restrictions.
Check before leaving
The rule does not apply to every nationality or visa category. Check the Department of State guidance for your exact circumstances before making travel plans.
At World Visa Group, we help individuals explore permanent residency pathways for their long-term immigration goals.
An expired visa stamp does not always end the journey, but never assume you qualify for AVR.
