Make sure your student record is active
International students planning a trip outside the United States should check their immigration documents before leaving. F-1 and M-1 students need the appropriate Form I-20, while J-1 exchange visitors should carry their Form DS-2019.
Students should also confirm that their SEVIS records are active and that their passports and visas meet the requirements for returning to the US.
Check your travel signature
The travel endorsement on your document has a limited validity period:
- F-1 students: Generally 12 months, reduced to six months for students on OPT.
- M-1 students: Generally six months.
- J-1 students: Generally 12 months, reduced to six months for participants on Academic Training.
If the signature has expired, contact your school's designated official or program sponsor before travelling.
Students on OPT should prepare carefully
F-1 students on Optional Practical Training should check the documents needed for their return, including their EAD card and evidence of employment where applicable. Travelling while an OPT application is still pending can raise additional issues, so seek advice from your international student office before departure.
A valid visa and a signed document do not guarantee admission. The officer at the US port of entry makes that decision.
