Canada’s new Express Entry approach comes with important details that skilled workers should understand before relying on a job offer to strengthen their permanent residence application.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has provided further guidance on how it will assess high-wage occupations and job offers under the upcoming Express Entry changes. The additional details explain how occupation classifications will be determined, what happens if the eligible occupation list changes, and why a job offer does not automatically guarantee extra Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points.
How will Canada assess high-wage occupations?
IRCC will use wage information from the previous three years to classify occupations into the applicable wage tiers. The assessment draws on data from sources including Job Bank, the Labour Force Survey, and the Census of Population.
An occupation's classification will reflect the highest wage tier it met during that period. This means applicants should check the official occupation list rather than assume that their job title alone determines their eligibility.
What if the occupation list changes after an invitation?
The timing of an Invitation to Apply (ITA) is important. According to IRCC's guidance, the occupation list applicable on the date a candidate receives an ITA will be used for the assessment.
This clarification matters for candidates whose occupations could be classified differently in future updates. Applicants should retain their relevant records and check the official instructions applicable to their circumstances.
